Debunk Myths About Time – Part 2

In “Debunk Myths About Time – Part 1,” I started talking about time, and how a lot of sales people use the excuse that they don’t have enough time.  If you missed Part 1 – click here to catch up!

By the end of this post I hope to have you thinking a little differently about how you use time as an excuse.  In fact,  you might find it difficult to ever tell somebody that you didnt have time for them.  So here’s Myth #3…



If you don’t have any time, then it is possible that you are literally trying to do EVERYTHING yourself.  A lot of people battle with letting go of important tasks and activities because they feel that nobody can do it as well as them.  Sound familiar to you?  Well, this is not only reserved for sales people either, as many small business owners fall into this trap of being too transactional, by trying to control everything to ensure that everything gets done correctly.

TRUTH – You simply cannot do everything, and effective delegation will alleviate the bottle-neck in your business.  There are only so many hours in a day, and the biggest challenge you will face is how to multi-task to the point where you are not required in every single aspect or detail of your business.  One person can only do so much, whereas a great team of people supporting you, or even one really good assistant, can have the effect of multiplying your efforts across your business.  Most business owners become the bottleneck in their own business that prevents the business from growing to a new level.  You don’t have to give up control if you are selective in who your recruit, and if you constantly inspect what you expect, from your team.



The difference between somebody who is self-employed, and somebody who is a business owner, is that a business owner has the ability to take time off without the business crashing to a grinding halt.  Generally a self-employed person is the business – think a dentist, doctor, plumber etc, who perform the operational duties of the business on a day-to-day basis.  Self-employed people face this massive challenge where they truly feel that if they take time off, then their business will suffer.


TRUTH – Everybody needs time off to recharge, and to allow for time to strategise, and plan for the future.  If you are stuck on the treadmill year after year, and can never lift your head above water to breath, then it is more likely that your business will suffer in the longer term.  Not only will you suffer burn-out at some stage, but you will not be giving the business sufficient direction in terms of its longer term growth strategies.  Plan for time-off every year so that you can recharge your own batteries, and so that you can give serious thought to the transformational and strategic side of your business.



So the next time you’re about to use “Time” as an excuse for anything, I want you to remember this story:

My 6 year old son Thomas had been asking me for weeks to download a game for him onto my phone.  For weeks, I kept forgetting, and every night, like clockwork, he would wait for me at the door and ask “Daddy, did you download my game today?”  Every night I would apologise and tell him “I’m sorry boy, but Daddy didn’t have time today.”  I was using “time” as my excuse, until one day a friend told me to go home that night and tell my son, “Sorry boy, but Daddy didn’t make you a priority today.”

That hurt.  But the shock was needed.  Thomas got his game that very night.

You see, we all have time, but we all get to make choices with how we use our time.  So the next time you’re about to tell a customer, a friend, or a family member that you don’t have enough time for them, remember this story, and consider whether you have made them a priority in your day.

    There are some very good good TED talks by David Allen on this topic. His book “Getting things done” gives some great processes and practical examples.
